Charon

Charon is the largest moon of the dwarf planet Pluto. It is named after the mythological ferryman of the dead in Greek mythology, who transported souls across the river Styx to the underworld. Charon is notable for its size relative to Pluto, as it is about half the diameter of Pluto, making it one of the largest moons in relation to its parent body in the solar system. The moon has a unique orbit that is synchronous with Pluto, meaning that it always shows the same face to the planet as it orbits. This leads to interesting dynamics between Pluto and Charon, sometimes referred to as a double system due to their relative sizes and the way they orbit a common center of mass located outside of Pluto. Charon features a diverse landscape, including large canyons, craters, and possibly a subsurface ocean, which has been a subject of study in planetary science.
