Topic 04- Introduction to Engineering Drawing

Introduction

There are a lot of different terms and definitions which define the basis of design and drafting in engineering. You must familiarize yourself with all of them in order to comply with the demands of your profession.

Note that we have only considered very common terms. This topic will only provide a guide to those who want to study further and know more about different terms in this subject. You can know more about by researching it

Most of the definitions related to important topics are explained in their respective topics. If you want to know about a certain term. Make sure if it is not already explained in some of the other topics.

So without further ado; lets get right on the terms and understand them one by one.

Important terms to know

Graphics Language

The word languages cannot completely describe the different aspects such as shape or size of a part or assembly completely as well as concisely. For this we need the graphic language; it uses lines to represent the several features or characteristics of a design of objects. The language is commonly related to “drawing” or “drafting”.

This can be accomplished by making sketches, computer methods which includes software and instruments which is often related to engineering drawing.

Engineering Drawing

Engineering drawing are divided into graphics language and the use of simple notes to describe simple ideas where the graphics language is not a necessary part.

Projection Technique

The projection theory is used to graphically represent 3-D objects on 2-D media (paper, computer screen). It is basically defined by a simple strategy of using the line of sight and the plane of projection. This defines the difference between the parallel and perspective projections. There are pros and cons to both of the sides. For engineering purposes, we use the Parallel Projection technique.

Drawing Scale

Scale is the ratio of the linear dimension of a feature of an object shown in the drawing to the real linear dimension of the same element of the object.
