Artemis Program

The Artemis Program is an international space exploration initiative led by NASA, aiming to return humans to the Moon by the mid-2020s, with a focus on sustainable exploration and the establishment of a long-term human presence. The program is named after Artemis, the Greek goddess of the Moon and twin sister of Apollo, reflecting a connection to the earlier Apollo missions that first landed humans on the Moon in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Artemis seeks to land the first woman and the next man on the lunar surface, specifically aiming for the lunar South Pole, an area believed to contain water ice and other valuable resources. The initiative includes plans for the development of new spacecraft, such as the Orion crew vehicle and the Space Launch System (SLS), a powerful rocket designed to carry astronauts and cargo to the Moon.

Additionally, the Artemis Program emphasizes collaboration with international and commercial partners, aiming to foster global cooperation in space exploration. The ultimate goal is to establish a foundation for future crewed missions to Mars and beyond, thereby expanding humanity’s presence in the solar system.
